Drivers Hate Pedestrians

A new study shows drivers don't like pedestrians.

A person behind the wheel views someone walking on the street with contempt -  because the pedestrian is seen as an obstacle the driver has to get around. But when the driver is also walking, or riding a bike, his attitude toward other pedestrians isn't nearly as bad.

The researchers say two experimental studies showed that explicit attitudes towards a group of young people in an ambiguous social situation are more negative when they are viewed from behind the wheel of a car.

They conclude this means that cars and downtown urban areas with a lot of foot traffic just don't mix.
